Meruem begins to show the effects of Rose's bomb, having survived with a limited time. He seeks out Komugi, and discovers Palm. Realizing that she was once human, he asks her to aid him in finding Komugi. Initially hesitant, Palm agrees to help the King find his belove
Meruem begins to show signs of weakness after his fight with Netero. He decides to hunt down the rare earth girl and finds Palm. Recognizing her, he asks her to accompany him on his search for Komugi.
Meruem finds Palm in Bizeff's mansion and asks her to take him to the girl he's looking for. She first pretends not to know who Meruem is but then gives in, realizing how much the King has changed after being poisoned by Netero's rose bomb.
Like Palm's brief alliance with the King, Your Lie in April also plays around with the characters' perceptions of each other. People typically fail to recognize their enemies as whole people. It's much easier to demonize them than to extend empathy.
The boy King's transformation through his relationship with Komugi parallels Palm's development as a character. When they first meet, she is more of an animal than a human, murderous and wild. Her evolution into a more empathetic character, who can see her enemy as a person, greatly parallels Meruem's change. It seems that the perspective gained through her abuse has finally given her the empathy she needed to relate to someone despite vast obstacles
The key difference between the King's evolution and Palm's is that she wasn't forced to change. Over time, she worked on herself and learned to enjoy the company of others outside of Netero and Pariston. Her growth was her own, but the King had no experience interacting with humans beyond the occasional hunt and massacre. In hunting down Komugi, the King shows that he feels a connection with people - a feeling he didn't know existed until he met Palm.
That Meruem came to Palm for help showed that he has come a long way from the creature who was willing to destroy villages and kill thousands of people. Now, he thinks nothing of admitting that his life is in danger. He trusts that Palm won't take advantage of his weakness and will help him with his last wish, showing a remarkable leap in character development.
What was different about the scene for you? Did Meruem's behavior surprise you? Why or why not?
Serpico has been working with the king since before he left to go to the Chimera Ant nest in the East Gorteau. Unfortunately, his role changed through those early events that have Meruem poisoning himself and everyone else at the East Gorteau's palace. After events transpire, Serpico decides he will take a chance on being able to curry favor with the King where others are just as eager to exterminate him.
I took to calling this era the "Goldilocks" years. I was neither too young or too old, I was just right. In my mid 20s you can still see your reflection in a spoon (before you start wearing reading glasses), and it's the perfect age for getting engaged, having an elaborate wedding and resents the woman who never learned to take control of her money
